What is the General Social Care Council?
The General Social Care Council (GSCC) is the workforce regulator for social care workers. Our three main functions are to:
- Establish codes of practice for social care workers and employers
- Set up a register of 1.4 million social care workers in England
- Regulate social work education and training.
What is the General Social Care Council's mission?
The General Social Care Council exists to promote the highest standards of social care in England for the benefit and protection of people who use services and the wider public by:
- acting as a guardian of standards in social care practice and as a champion of a committed workforce;
- requiring the highest standards of conduct from social care workers, and compliance with a code of practice;
- promoting the highest standards of training for social care workers;
- always keeping the best interests of service users and the wider public at the heart of the organisation; and
- working in an open, accessible and inclusive way.

I've successfully studied for a GSCC-recognised qualification but I've lost my certificate. Can I get a duplicate?
Yes. The GSCC's student records team can supply you with a duplicate certificate. Contact them on 020 7645 3449 or email info-verification@gscc.org.uk.
How will I know when I am required to register with the General Social Care Council?
All qualified social workers must register before April 2005. You can get an application form by calling the registration helpline on 0845 070 0630 or emailing registration@gscc.org.uk.
The Government are currently deciding which groups of social care workers will be required to register next. Keep an eye on the news and events section of our website or the sector press for announcements.
