GSCC works with Disability Rights Commission to end discrimination

22/05/2006

Today’s announcement that the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) will be carrying out a formal review of regulations and procedures governing entry into social work, teaching and nursing is welcomed by the General Social Care Council (GSCC).

The GSCC has been working closely with the DRC for the past year to ensure equality and fairness in the standards they set for those working in, or considering a career in, social work. The GSCC is a member of the DRC reference group, advising the DRC on this new, formal investigation. Over the last year, the DRC has also provided training sessions for GSCC staff and the GSCC’s independent Conduct Committee on compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).

GSCC Chief Executive, Lynne Berry said:

“We are delighted to be working in close partnership with the DRC to ensure that fitness to practice is assessed fairly for those either considering a career in social work or currently practising as Registered Social Workers (RSWs). A diverse workforce is essential for social work and we aim to encourage equality of opportunity across the workforce.”

“The GSCC recognises that people with disabilities make an important contribution to social care and high standards as part of the workforce. We look forward to working with the DRC to achieve improvement.”
