Annual Meeting for General Social Care Council

17/09/2003

The General Social Care Council is to hold its second annual meeting on 22 September.

Items on the agenda include the initial findings from the review of post-qualifying training for social workers and a report looking at how to find out whether the codes of practice for social care workers and employers are achieving their aims. The Council will also appoint its Vice-chair and committee chairs for the year ahead and agree committee memberships.

Council agendas are posted on the GSCC’s website, www.gscc.org.uk, and all Council meetings are open to the public. They include a question-and-answer session. A summary of each meeting is put on the website soon after each meeting.

Chair of the GSCC, Rodney Brooke, said: “Reaching our second annual meeting as a Council is an exciting milestone and it is fitting that it coincides with the anniversary of the launch of the first codes of practice for social care workers and employers.

“Consulting on and launching the codes of practice, and sending out over 900,000 copies in the space of a year, is just one of our major achievements. Another has been opening the Social Care Register. Already, thousands of social workers throughout England are filling in their registration forms.”

The GSCC is working with around 40 employers in the public, private and voluntary sectors across England and has distributed over 11,000 forms. A further 10,000 will be sent out in October.

Mr Brooke said: “The GSCC was set up almost from scratch just two years ago with a very big agenda for a brand new system of regulation for social care to provide greater protection for service users, carers and the public. We’re making good inroads into that agenda. This annual meeting will be a fitting point to prepare for future work.”

Notes:
The Council holds six meetings a year in public. The GSCC advise those wishing to attend the meeting to call in advance, due to limited space. Please contact Secretariat to the Council on 020 7397 5100.
