The needs of people using social care have been safeguarded by Government endorsement of the work of the social care regulators today.
The ministerial decision protects the work of the General Social Care Council, the body that regulates social care workers and sets standards of good practice for the care sector. This will ensure its work continues to promote high standards and public protection for the benefit of the 1.5 million people, including children, adults with disabilities and older people using social care every day.
Commenting on the decision, GSCC’s Chair Rodney Brooke said:
"The 1.5 million people every day using social care are at the heart of our mission. It is important for them that the social care workforce is properly trained, checked and accountable for delivering high standards of care. We are therefore delighted that the Government’s decision will enable the General Social Care Council to continue its work of driving up standards and raising public confidence in the social care workforce in England.”
“We look forward to continuing to work closely with our colleagues in other regulators, such as the Council for the Regulation of Healthcare Professionals and Commission for Social Care Inspection, together with others in the sector to take our mission forward.”
Notes:
The review has safeguarded the future of the GSCC as a 'long term arms-length body'. The General Social Care Council started work in October 2001 to establish codes of practice for social care workers and employers, to register social care workers and regulate social work education and training. Its legal basis is the Care Standards Act 2000.
