GSCC welcomes Government spotlight on social care workforce and their registration

21/07/2005

Today’s announcement of a major Government review of the social care workforce is an important step forward for staff, users and the sector as a whole, the General Social Care Council said.

Reacting to today’s speech by Care Services Minister Liam Byrne MP, Rodney Brooke, Chair, said:

“The Minister is right to highlight the contribution of the hundreds of thousands of people working in social care. They work every day with people in vulnerable situations or at times of severe strain. So we share the Minister’s call for a wide-ranging review to look at how we can improve quality in social care and better protect the public by examining how to support and develop the social care workforce.”

“The Government has asked the GSCC to begin early work to register all domiciliary and care home staff in both adult and children’s services alongside this review.

“Rolling out workforce regulation has an important part to play in building user confidence and tackling issues in training, retention and quality.

“Today’s announcement shows the Government’s commitment to making this a reality and we look forward to working closely with them to spread the benefits of registration to all social care workers in the near future.”
