Terry Butler CBE appointed to GSCC Council

26/10/2005

Terry Butler CBE has been appointed a member of the General Social Care Council (GSCC).  He replaces Terry Bamford OBE, whose appointment expired at the end of August.

Earlier this year, Terry Butler stood down as Hampshire County Council's (HCC) Director of Social Services, after seventeen-and-a-half years of service.   Mr Butler was the longest-serving social services director in England and remains an adviser to HCC.   He joined HCC in 1988 from East Sussex County Council, where he was Deputy Director of Social Services.   At HCC, Mr Butler was instrumental in helping to support service users to remain independent and have a stronger voice, as well as shaping improvements in services to children, adult and older persons across Hampshire.

Nationally, Mr Butler has acted as a Government adviser and was seconded to the Department of Health to help implement the community care reforms in the early 1990s.  He is currently the adviser on social care to the National Patient Safety Agency, a member of the Information Tribunal and Vice-President of the Relatives and Residents Association.  In 1993, he was awarded the CBE.

GSCC Chair Rodney Brooke said: “I am delighted that Terry Butler has been appointed a member of the General Social Care Council.  He will make a huge contribution to the Council’s work.  The knowledge and experience accrued by Terry in Hampshire and elsewhere will prove invaluable to the GSCC.”

Terry Butler’s remuneration for this appointment is £5,673 per annum.  He holds no other ministerial appointments and has declared no political activity.
