GSCC boosts policy capacity with appointment of Owen Davies

24/01/2006

The General Social Care Council (GSCC) has announced that Owen Davies will be its new Head of Policy Development from February 2006.

Owen Davies’ appointment will support the growing policy work of the GSCC, contributing to its work to raise standards in social care and protect the public and the widening role of social care in England. In particular, Owen will be focusing on the next groups to join the Social Care Register.

Announcing the appointment, Chief Executive Lynne Berry said:

“I am delighted to welcome Owen to the GSCC. His vast knowledge and experience of social care will reinforce the GSCC’s policy capacity and make a major contribution to our work to extend registration to the wider social care workforce.”

Commenting on his new role, Owen Davies said:

"I have worked closely with the GSCC since its creation in 2001. I'm delighted to be taking on the important role of developing the organisation's policy work at a critical time for social care. I have learnt a huge amount from my work in UNISON but I now relish this new challenge. I look forward to working with my new colleagues and with the GSCC's partners to promote the development of effective and robust policies for the regulation of the social care workforce and of the GSCC's contribution to the wider social care debate."

Owen Davies is a qualified social worker with a wealth of experience in social services having worked in Oxfordshire and East Sussex. He joins from Unison, where he is the union’s National Officer for Social Care. Owen is a member of a number of groups and taskforces and sat on the advisory group which advised Government on the establishment of the GSCC.
